Milan Curcic

Assistant Scientist
Department of Ocean Sciences

Milan Curcic is a meteorologist and physical oceanographer who studies the physics of ocean waves and their role in Earth-system prediction using theory, measurements, and numerical modeling. He earned a B.S. in Meteorology from the University of Belgrade (2009) and a Ph.D. in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Miami (2015), with doctoral work focused on momentum-conserving wind–wave–current coupling. His research has contributed to improving how waves and currents are represented in prediction systems, including collaborations with teams connected to NASA and the U.S. Navy on Earth-system modeling and forecasting capabilities.

At the University of Miami, Milan is an Assistant Professor of Ocean Sciences with a joint appointment in the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing. Within the SUSTAIN ecosystem, his work connects controlled laboratory measurements and numerical modeling to understand wind–wave–current interactions in extreme conditions, including hurricane-relevant regimes. He is also active in scientific software development and open, reproducible research practices, building tools that help the broader community analyze wave processes and incorporate wave physics into coupled ocean–atmosphere modeling.
